Mursley moths

I'm continuing to run my Skinner trap every few days in my small Mursley garden. Over the last couple of days I've been pleased to catch (and identify!) Feathered Gothic, Centre-barred Sallow, Setaceous Hebrew Character and Small Ranunculus, amongst others. I've now recorded 206 species, but of course iRecord is still flagging up around 30 of these as 'coordinate outside known 10km range' and others are flagged as needing expert checking. Still. I'm enjoying it.

A few I've been stuck on over the last couple of days:
Is this just a pale form of Yellow Shell?

Could these be Chestnut? It seems too early and no dark mark next to the kidney.

Is this a Southern Wainscot?

Could this be a faded Currant Pug?

Sorry if these are stupid questions.

  1. Hi Mick,
I do hope you are potting up lots of micros for me to identify. That will increase your garden numbers totals also. First one is indeed a Yellow Shell. This moth I find bizarre because it only seems to come to light traps late in the season. The next 2 are Square-spot Rustics, the next one looks to me a candidate for Webb's Wainscot, but I'll await Mr Wilton's verdict as he's seen more of them than I and the final one is also a good candidate for a Currant Pug. It's too late for Wornmwood Pug I think.

    1. I agree with all that Peter has said, including Webb's Wainscot (a very nice garden record). Small Ranunculus is also a nice moth to get. You seem to be improving the coverage of your 10km square very nicely indeed - thanks for taking up the challenge!
