Five-spot Burnet

I have included two photo's of the Burnets I saw today. Last year I was asked which one's they were. So today I managed some shots, two of which I attach. Can you tell from these which of the five-spots they are?.

  2. Yeah, sorry Dave, of course the query last year came from Wendy Campbell from the Butterfly sightings, when I reported from just down the fields up here at Garsington on some old uncultivated ground on the edge of a hay meadow.

  3. Separating the 2 is quite tricky, but Narrow-bordered usually has the third and fourth spots clearly separated and the third is smaller than the others. In addition NB5SB lacks any reddish scales between the 3rd and 4th spots. There are differences to anntenal shape also, with NB5SB being widest around the 14th ring from the tip, whilst 5SB around the 9th ring. Based on that, which do you think you have?

  4. Thanks Peter, I guess I have the Narrow-bordered but I'm afraid I didn't count the rings on the antennae.
