More Dark Moths

Further new moths for the year list to the garden trap here at Westcott, Bucks have included Ancylis achatana, Large Emerald & Clay (all 1st), Lackey & Drinker (2nd), Acleris kochiella, Small Fan-footed Wave, Scalloped Oak, Swallow-tailed & Common Rustic agg (3rd) and Endotricha flammealis & Double Dart (both 4th).  Alongside the very drab-looking Double Dart in last night's trap was another equally dark moth which has taken me a while to place, but I've come to the conclusion that it must be f. nigra of Poplar Grey - that's unless anyone can suggest an alternative!

    What about a Coronet?

      That crossed my mind too but I dismissed it because the wing shape doesn't look quite right and this is a significantly bigger moth than any Coronet I've seen (forewing length is about 22mm, which is big even for Poplar Grey).

    OK, I would go for Sycamore due to the uniform colouration. Anyway, Dave clearly kept the moth for dissection and checked the colour of the hind wings. Did he not?
