Did it have a broad dark border to the hindwing? It does look like a Scarce Bordered Straw
Adam, yes it did. Big smudgy dark grey/ black border like a yellow underwing (with the yellow replaced with light grey).
Yes, that's Scarce Bordered Straw, a nice find! It is rather more variable than the images in the field guide might suggest, unlike its close relative the Bordered Straw which hardly varies at all.
