Which pyrausta?

Are these both pyrausta, and if so, aurata? The first is from May and the second is from this week.

A few orange swifts have been visiting, plus straw spots, mother of pearl and brown house moths.

This is my first light brown apple moth.

Lesser yellow underwing (I think). I saw the yellow but couldn't photo it.

Is anyone else having trouble with hornets? They're forcing me indoors most evenings at the moment.

  1. Hello Jacqui, the first Pyrausta may well be aurata but you can't be sure without seeing the hind-wings clearly. The second Pyrausta is definitely aurata.

The appearance of insects other than moths is something that we have to accept when using light to draw them in. Hornets are quite common locally, especially in or near woodland, and for the most part I find that they're pretty docile when they've settled down inside a trap. You just need to be aware that they might be around and be careful where you put your fingers!
