A couple of Brown ones

I'm probably missing the obvious with these two but can't decide. The first has a border to its hindwings.

  1. Hi Andy,

Yes, it is the obvious, I'm afraid (another two or three weeks and you'll be fed up with this moth!). Have a look at Square-spot Rustic.

    1. Thank you. I can definitely see that now with the first one. However the second is quite a different overall shape and has the extra dart mark next to the oval. Having looked at the books further I was wondering if it might be a Garden Dart?

  2. Hi Andy,

Apologies, I was guilty of not looking closely enough at the second one. I've lightened the image and added it back under your original and, as you say, there's now a clear dart marking which rules out Square-spot Rustic. I think it can only be Garden Dart, as you suggest, and that's quite a good record these days because the moth is not common at all now in our area. I'm sure Martin will confirm (or correct us!).

  3. No problem. On several occasions I have tried lightening images using 'Fill light' on Picassa but when I post the image on the blog it reverts to it's original darker form.

  4. I used Photoshop in this particular case. I'm certainly not a computer expert but I would have thought that if you modify an image and then save it again to wherever you keep your pictures (using a slightly different file name so that you don't over-write the original - I just give them a suffix 'a'), then you should be able to select that file to upload. Maybe it is not always as simple as that!

  5. Yes its a Garden Dart. I'm not in favour of alteration of photos it could be misleading.
