Which Notocelia

I think this micro from last night's catch is probably Notocelia trimaculana, and is it a possible candidate for Notocelia rosaecolana instead? The two look very similar to me.

I have kept the moth.

  1. Hi Steve, I would put that down as trimaculana - for me rosaecolana has more costal strigulae, which are finer and more obliquely angled; trimaculana seems to have three sets of costal strigulae, thicker and more perpendicular. However, having said that, I noted a comment from Martin Harvey recently that suggested some research into this pair might conclude that they are not safely separated on markings - I hoe that doesn't happen.

  2. So far they are all trimaculana out this way, I find rosaecolana is slightly later. I do end up dissecting a number of them, usually from about now onwards just to be sure.
