I would say it is definitely a Common wainscot and the dark coloration you describe is something I found in an individual two years ago in Benson in my old garden. I had a female with a black body, dark hindwings and underside to both fore and hind wings. It was so unusual I kept it and took lots of images which I will post one of now in anew post.
