The rain is giving me a welcome chance to work through my backlog from May, with 57 species already nailed compared to 51 for the rest of the year so far. More to come. I may well be back with assorted pugs but may I check whether I am right in thinking that the moth above is Square-spot Rustic and the one below possibly White-marked? Or is another SSR? Or am I wrong on both..? Many thanks in advance.

Hi Martin, both pictures show the same species - Small Square-spot! This is usually another very common moth, with two generations. It had a massive population crash locally three or four years ago but seems to be building itself up again now.
ReplyDeleteUnless you are in the Tardis and have advanced some months, you are a bit early for Square-spot Rustic. Try Small Square-spot.
ReplyDeleteMany thanks! That was quick! Apologies for anachronism too. All best M
