caloptilia elongella? further pic

Dave thought he might be able to id this without it's leg in the way - I found another pic which might help - along with the original.

  1. I'm afraid that doesn't help, Mark - if anything the leg is now obscuring more of the costa!

  3. To me, this looks more like rufipennella, with what looks like dark chocolate brown fore legs with white marks rather than elongella/betulicola, but not easy to tell from the photos.

I didn't think that elongella/betulicola were reliably separable without dissection (unless reared, as the foodplants are different), or is there a distinguishing feature that I am not aware of?

  4. Some clever soul has recently made separation via dissection much easier: http://www.dissectiongroup.co.uk/page2908.html
