The other I think is a Turnip. Having checked in one book it says one thing - looking at another it shows something that breaks the rule. I'm thinking about the more continuous black line that accentuates a pale fringe to the wings. But I'd appreciate if someone would could tell me how to tell them apart because both seem variable.

Hi Mark, yes to Plain Golden Y. With the others it would perhaps be easier to tell with the moth 'in hand' rather than from a photo but to me they have the stockier appearance of Heart & Club. Turnip is generally (but not always) a larger, longer moth. If in doubt its gleaming white hind-wings should clinch the ID.
