The warmer night refilled the trap after a quiet spell and interesting moths arrived. I hope I'm right in assuming that the one above is a Blair's Shoulder-knot, but it's the first I've seen with an ermine collar. Is this prophetic?
I'm a bit thrown by the one below which looked entirely unfamiliar when I first clocked it. Is it a Brick? Help much appreciated, as ever. Martin Wainwright, Thrupp, Oxon

Looks a bit like a worn Bordered Straw to me but see what others say, bw, Marc

ReplyDeleteThanks so much, both. I had wondered about Scarce Bordered Straw but am cautious about going for rarer IDs. I like the alternative name of Old World Bollworm! It may still be there; I'll go and have a look.

I've not seen Blair's Shoulder-knot with such an obvious white thorax but that probably doesn't mean much! I'd go with the very variable Scarce Bordered Straw too. Bordered Straw (which doesn't vary much at all) does look a bit like this but would have a very obvious black dot at the trailing edge of the forewing.
