Cochylis atricapitana and another Elachista

The moth numbers are starting to pick up again in the garden, with Treble Lines and Heart and Dart making first appearances. A few more micros now as well, including this Cochylis atricapitana.

There was also another small 4mm moth that I assume is another Elachista - possibly canapennella?

  1. What is 4mm? Length or wingspan or wing length? Looks like a candidate for Bucculatrix nigricomella. The head is usually fairly black, but it does have fawn brown hairs laterally.

    1. Hi Peter, yes I should have said forewing 4mm. Thanks for your suggestion - I will take a look at B. nigricomella.

  2. I agree with Peter that it does look Bucculatrix nigricomella but for one thing - that species has white eye-caps which are usually very obvious. I think I would have kept that one for dissection.
