Autumnal Rustic

I had this moth in my trap last night in Beenham Berks. I believe that it is an Autumnal Rustic, but as it's not one that I have had before (in 14 years of trapping) I thought that I would seek confirmation.

The book says common but perhaps less so now and this far south?

Many Thanks

  1. Hello Derek, yes that's Autumnal Rustic, a nice catch and a very smart-looking moth when fresh. It is one of those species which might be "common" elsewhere in the country but isn't around here! In Bucks I've seen it in numbers only in three areas of the county and they are the Ashridge Estate (chalk grassland), Rammamere Heath (heathland on greensand) and the old disused railway cutting at Salden Wood near Mursley which is soon to be consumed by East-West Rail. I suspect your example will be a wanderer from nearby chalk grassland.
