Another visit to a different part of
Bernwood Forest last night produced eight examples of my target species, Scarce Prominent. While the trap wasn't exactly over-endowed with moths during the usual three-hour stint, amongst the other 17 species caught were Scalloped Hook-tip and Early Tooth-striped.

Earlier in the day I'd been attempting unsuccessfully to get an Emperor Moth record for the area of VC24 around
Colnbrook, just west of Heathrow Airport, but I did find half a dozen early examples of
Adela reaumurella dancing around above a field maple.

ReplyDeleteAs you'll be aware, there are getting on for 100 records in VC24 Bucks spread right across the county, but it is most likely to be encountered in woodland with well-established birches. I feel privileged to have had a singleton in the garden once, back in 2009 - a lovely moth. Being one of that small group of Prominents which appear early in the season and which are (currently, at least) single-brooded, it doesn't get recorded by all that many folk.
