Garden 1st

The trap was quite poor last night with only 12 moths of 9 species. However, this included a first for me and my garden, a White-marked.

New for year were Aphomia sociella and Barred Hook-tip.



Also, this caterpillar had snuck in.  Any ideas what species it is? It's c20mm long.

    Hi Adam, The caterpillar is most likely to be the Lesser Yellow Underwing

    Hi Adam,
    That's a very smart White-marked. We average only four or five sightings per year in Bucks even though the moth is fairly widespread across the county. Most of the records these days are from traps run in woodland, so in the current situation I wasn't really expecting any at all this year, but anyone (like you) who has a garden in a woodland edge situation could potentially be lucky.

    I agree with John that the caterpillar is Lesser Yellow Underwing.
