Slim but at least varied pickings!

Like Dave very small numbers this week but a few new for the year sightings such as Grey Pine Carpet, Pine Hawk-moth (both good here as there are only the odd pine trees in people's gardens to support them), Poplar Hawk-moth, Dwarf Pug and the first of very many Treble Lines to come. Muslin Moth and Waved Umber seem to be ever present.

Above is the first Clepsis dumicolana of the year here today in Longwick (or rather there were four of them). It is my earliest ever date by a day and emergence can vary up to later than the 20th. As a birdwatcher I am well aware of observer bias and with insects you have to factor in the weather too as the Clepsis generally fly only in sunshine, often late afternoon.

Anyway it is good to know the Buckinghamshire outpost continues.

  1. Ah, Clepsis dumicolana ... good to know that your garden colony still survives, as far as we know still the only one outside central London!
