Beaded Chestnut vs Lunar Underwing.

I have too much tremor to check the hindwings and I'm really not sure about this one. It's dark so there is no sign of the black marks on the leading edge of the wing. The lack of distinct black triangles at the wing tip suggest Beaded Chestnut. The veins suggest Lunar Underwing. The oval mark inclines towards the Beaded Chestnut?

  1. Hi Mark, to me this is a rather dark Beaded Chestnut - you mention the veins, and interestingly when seen on this species they often seem to 'break' just before reaching the sub-terminal line (while for the Lunar Underwing they always appear continuous through this region - at least on the specimens that I have encountered).

  2. thanks Dave, that's what I was tending towards. Luckily most aren't as tricky as this one.
