Micro ID

An excellent few days, both in the garden and out and about. Few micros but these two I'm struggling to identify. Above I think might be Agonopterix purpurea, on size alone, it's tiny.

I've drawn a blank on this one despite a long time with Chris Manley's photographic guide.  Any help with ID would be greatly appreciated....

Both the above were from an actinic trap in fields near North Leigh, Witney.

  1. Hullo Nic; I wonder if the bottom one is Depressaria chaerophylli

  2. I'd agree with Charles, definitely a Depressaria species and could well be chaerophylli, but that's one to keep for dissection if you still have it. The top picture is indeed Agonopterix purpurea.

  3. Thanks Charles & Dave.
I do still have the moth. Interestingly I can't actually find chaerophylli in Sterling, Parsons, Lewington. Is it known by another name?

  4. Hi Nic,
    Have a look here: https://ukmoths.org.uk/species/depressaria-chaerophylli/
The field guide only includes details of about two-thirds of the UK's micro species for very good reasons (see the introduction on page 7).

    1. Thanks Dave,
It's amazing that they cover as many species as they do in that book!
