Clearwings: orange-tailed to HYL

I've had some success with clearwings lately, with singles of yellow-legged, red-belted and currant over the past week. However, I thought I'd try my luck with a raspberry clearwing (HYL) lure today, but instead I have just caught an orange-tailed clearwing.

I believe that's rather unusual?

  1. Hi Paul,
I've not heard specifically of Orange-tailed coming to HYL but there are many recorded instances of these lures bringing in the "wrong" moth, so one does always need to check each visitor carefully! Anglian Lepidopterist Supplies keep an updated list of non-intended species attracted to the clearwing lures on their website. 2. It may be quite early in the year for Raspberry based on my limited experience. Having caught one in 2021 in early August I had the lure out for much of July last year and finally got one on 31st. It is also worth leaving the lures out in the evening as they seem to fly late in the day.

    1. Indeed, records elsewhere suggest a flight period of mid-July to mid-August. My one (and so far only) Raspberry Clearwing in the garden was on 28th July last year and it arrived sometime between 6pm and 7pm.
