Rosy Footman and Kent Black Arches finally made it to Sibford in the last couple of nights.
Notocelia roborana was also new for the garden although I am surprised I have not had it before.
What I think is probably just a pale Scarce Footman but I would appreciate confirmation that it is not Hoary.

Hi Andy, regarding your Footman, I had several like this last year that I felt were good candidates for Hoary, with hindwings just like yours. So I sent the most likely for dissection, and it proved to be Scarce. My own feeling, (based on rather slim evidence!), is that if there is even the slightest hint of creamy colour in the hindwing, then it probably isn't Hoary, but I'm sure Dave will have a more informed view!

ReplyDeleteI agree with Phil, if there's a hint of yellow on the hind wings then it will very likely be Scarce Footman even though the exterior of the moth may look to be a good candidate. Although established locally now, it is worth remembering that Hoary is still a migrant too, so you'll have a greater chance of success with candidates seen in September and October.
