Early birds!

Apart from getting up very early to photograph them before they get eaten, has anyone found a way of deterring early birds getting the moths from the outside of the trap? My plastic owl just seems to be another perch for them, judging by the decoration it's getting.

Thanks Andy

  1. Hello Andy,

I'm afraid there's no real answer to the problem of birds other than getting up early. Once they've found a ready source of food like this they'll be back again and again and if you're not careful you might even find one of them having breakfast inside the trap!

I realise this may not suit everyone, but my routine is to get up before dawn - currently 4.30am - to make a note of what's on the outside of the traps or on the adjacent vegetation (potting up anything interesting), before securing the traps somewhere shady, turning off the lights and returning to bed. Those moths not actually inside the traps then have a chance to fly off before it gets fully light, hopefully before the birds are properly awake.
