Late Oak Hook-tip

Amongst the usual autumn moths in the garden trap last night was an Oak Hook-tip.
This is the latest I have recorded this moth, but I see from the Upper Thames Atlas that there have been other records even later in November. The only immigrant in the trap was a single Palpita vitrealis. Steve Trigg, Cookham

  1. Did you retain it? I was thinking that the Spiny Hook-tip is about, prety sure I had one a few years back before anyone cottoned on to it's occurance in the UK.

  2. Hi Mark, unfortunately I didn't retain the moth because I didn't realise it could be anything other than an Oak Hook-tip. I know better now, so I will definitely retain any future specimens should they turn up.

    1. Same happened to me, I had pictures of one from 2022(?) which very much looked like one to people who are familiar with the species. My theory is it's been in the UK breeding for some time. I also note that we have Holm Oak in the village and that's it's foodplant, like the Oak Rustic we also have here.
