Red Belted Clearwing?

Anyone able to make a positive ID from this? It's coming out of our old apple tree and something like 8-9 years ago I saw and adult flying around the tree so I know they were here.

Second question - is it likely to be this season's or do they hang around for years?

Third question - is there any particular time of day when they are out or conditions they favour? I might get lucky again.

  1. I'd be happy with that as a record for this year, Mark, if Red-belted Clearwing is known from the tree. Make an appropriate note in your records before they are submitted to your county recorder. The pupal case will not survive more than a week or two like that before disintegrating/being eaten and certainly won't be from a previous year. If you know of someone locally who has the MYO pheromone lure it would be worth trying it in your garden, otherwise have a think about investing in some lures next year (http://www.angleps.com/pheromones.php) and try it yourself. The lures themselves will last quite a few years if kept in the freezer when not in use.

  2. thanks Dave, not sure keeping lures in the freezer will go down too well but it's not that expensive if I only try them for the one year.
