While doing some digging in the garden my son came across this caterpillar. Our new book says that it likes oak but I can't remember seeing one for over a mile as the moth flies; this one was under an apple tree.
There are patches on this caterpillar that perfectly match the colour of the common lichen Lepraria incana, also in this photo. It all helps with avoiding the greedy Robins we have here.
