Plain Wave
I've been religiously checking through the many Riband Waves looking for a Plain Wave. This was from my trap last night in woodland at North Leigh. Although worn, it looks a good candidate. In particular the lack of a kink in the third cross-line. The photo' is deliberately underexposed to hopefully emphasise the wing markings. I don't think it's Cream. ID assistance would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi Nic,
ReplyDeleteThat's a Common Wave. The shape is quite different from Riband Wave or Plain Wave which have much smaller hind-wings. While anything is possible, I'd suggest you are unlikely to get Plain Wave in your garden as it is rather more a woodland moth, it isn't all that common in our area and is probably just about over for the year now anyway.
Sorry, just realised that this wasn't a garden record anyway! At least the habitat you were in means Plain Wave is more of a possibility.
DeleteYes, of course! I was looking at the 'Waves' page in the guide and "Common" is elsewhere in the book. A lot to learn on classification etc! Thanks for your help Dave.
