Schoenobius gigantella?


This moth came to my MV light sheet in oak woodland near Witney last night. It looks to me like a ♀︎Schoenobius gigantella. An unlikely habitat I would have thought. It's c24mm in length, so probably not Donacaula forficella, which as far as I can see, is the only likely confusion species. Would welcome any comments ....

  1. Hi Nic,
    I think with that wing length you are fairly safe with a female gigantella. I do find these reed-feeders (the smaller ones, anyway) quite difficult to separate from pictures though. S.gigantella does appear in unexpected places.
