Agonopterix heracliana/ciliella?

hi, can anyone confirm this would be Agonopterix heracliana/ciliella?

Only other moth last night was a Dotted Border.

  1. Hi Mark, yes it is. Assuming it is small then almost certainly heracliana too, but always worth checking the underside for signs of a pink flush around the legs and cilia especially if it is a large, well-marked example.

  2. Dave, it's 1cm head to wing tip. I've had a look at the underside (I assume you mean just the underside rather than the hind wings) and everything is brown. So I'm going to put it down as heracliana. thanks!

  3. Yes, you need a good view of the general appearance of the underside with the moth inside a pot (actually I find it easier to take a photo and then look at that on the screen). The pink tinge on A.ciliella is rather easier to look for than attempting to count lines in the hind-wing cilia which can in any case be a bit subjective, especially at this time of year when the moths are starting to get quite worn. Despite what the micro field guide says, ciliella is very uncommon in our area so if you do get a candidate please keep it for dissection!
