Chestnut or Dark Chestnut?

My wife found this on the kitchen window last night. It's a bit tatty which may make the wing shape based distinction between a Chestnut or Dark Chestnut tricky. I was thinking perhaps the Dark Chestnut?

Still nothing in the trap last night.

  1. Hi Mark,

Both look like Chestnut to me. BW, Marc Botham

  2. No problem, it'd be good to hear others' thoughts as, like you said, when they're a bit worn they are tricky from photos. In the hand I find them 'relatively' straight forward as they have a slightly different posture/jizz. To me the wings in Chestnut are always fairly rounded but much straighter in Dark Chestnut and Dark Chestnut always seems a narrower moth as a result. BW, Marc
