Some IDs please
Ran the trap last night for the first time for a week or so. I think I had an Emmelina monodactyla plus possibly two Small Quakers - and just maybe a lead coloured drab. I've attached pictures of these three (two pics of the Drab in different light). Plus 4 Hebrew Characters, 1 Early Grey, 6 Common Quakers and 3 or 4 Clouded Drabs. Mark Griffiths, Garsington, Oxford

Hello Mark, almost certainly a 'yes' to E.monodactyla (there is a confusion species, E.argoteles, but it is currently only known from wetland areas of East Anglia); I'm afraid the middle two pictures both show Clouded Drab; the bottom one is a Small Quaker.
ReplyDeleteLead-coloured Drab can turn up in gardens but it is not all that common and the likelihood of you getting it depends upon whether there's any poplar/aspen nearby (my impression is that it doesn't stray all that far from the larval food-plant).
By the way, it would be quite helpful when making ID requests to lay a ruler next to the moth so that the size is obvious in the photograph. Size matters, as they say!
thanks Dave, the Small Quaker is new for me and I was a bit doubtful about the Drab - which I think are pretty attractive despite their name.
