Marvellous as ever

I've been too superstitious to mention my wait for the Merveille du Jour to friends and I was beginning to wonder whether it would arrive this year before I pack things up. Last night, it did. Or rather they did, two fresh and beautiful specimens. Perhaps they were also attracted by our pumpkin.  Martin Wainwright, Thrupp, Oxon

  1. Nice one, Martin! I'm glad it appeared for you. The moth doesn't seem to have been as frequent a visitor as usual in my garden this year, but then that's been true of lots of other species too. Roll on 2025!

  2. Thanks Dave. My other big relief this year was getting a Clifden Nonpareil. Have there been many records of that in our area this Autumn? I guess the generally lower number of moths overall has been down to all the wet weather but it's not been too bad for me in terms of numbers of different types. Thanks again as always for your invaluable help. All warmest M

    1. I've certainly seen fewer Clifden Nonpareil this year compared to 2023, with just three in the garden and one in Bernwood Forest. Last year I saw 14, of which 10 were in the garden and the others at four different sites in Bucks. Hopefully this is just swings and roundabouts and things will bounce back next season.
