Does anyone have any experience of using Moonlander moth traps? I have been asked by someone who is keen to do some moth trapping but does not have a garden and is looking for a portable trap.
Andy Newbold, Sibford Ferris, Oxon.
I have no personal experience of the Moonlander but I've seen this question asked quite often in the past and the general consensus always seems to be to avoid them!
There's a good selection of decent portable traps on the ALS web-site:
Though it doesn't specifically answer your question. I have used my 20W heath trap from Paul Batty, with some success this can be run off of a battery and is portable(ish). I have also tried out the 5W LED conversion which I bought, but really haven't used it enough to report anything conclusive. I used to do a lot of trapping without a generator and found the most useful to be a 50W MV skinner running off an inverter/85Ah Battery - though this was a lot less portable! Paul website can be found at:
I've had a message about the Moonlander from someone with first hand experience, Andy, and I'll pass it on via email. Summing up for anyone else thinking of going down this route, the main complaint was "Completely useless - hardly any moths at all". Other key points: "poor design", "flimsy materiel", "easily damaged", "very expensive".
