Retrospective ID help please

In clearing photo files this am I came across this one from 29 June 2019. Photographed in garden at Goring on Thames Oxon. Seems most likely to be Brown Scallop as we have Buckthorn in the garden but looks more pug like than the references I have looked at?? Isobel Huggins

  1. I think you are correct with Brown Scallop, Isobel and a nice fresh female specimen too which would fit with the date you saw it. The wing-edge scalloping is obvious and even from that odd angle the small discal spot is just visible in the centre of the fore-wing.

Brown Scallop is quite widespread across our area so there's no reason why you shouldn't get it at Goring. From a distance it could perhaps be confused with Dentated Pug but that's quite a rare beast these days. It has never been seen in Bucks and has probably been lost from its few sites in Berks and Oxon.
