Absent Mottled Umbers

I have had neither Mottled, nor Scarce ditto this year; and none in local woods either. Is this a common experience elsewhere?

  1. Hi Robin,
That's a bit surprising. Scarce Umber is perhaps the "less common" of the two but both are widespread and neither one is confined to a single food-plant so they should really turn up just about everywhere in our area. Scarce is well past its peak now and should be over within a week or so (23 in the garden here so far this season, which is above average). Mottled I've only seen sporadically so far and it hasn't really got going properly yet (only five in the garden so far this season), but of course it will be around for a couple of months yet.

  2. 7 Scarce Umbers in the garden and 13 in local woodland up here in the north of Bucks, but only a couple of Mottled in the garden so far

  3. Just one in my garden in Winnersh on 27 Nov. None since but not trapped much due to the cold.
