Spurred on by a visiting six-year-old, I put the trap out for the first time in several weeks and was rewarded this morning with a male Mottled Umber and a Red-green Carpet, both in very good condition. The eggboxes also contained this curious object - an egg hatchery? A cocoon? - and I wondered if anyone knew what it might be? My rather grubby thumb gives scale of a sort, below.

No idea what it is, Martin, but would be worth keeping to see what it produces. I'd suggest cutting around it and removing from the egg-box, though, just in case it is something you wouldn't really want in your trap!
ReplyDeleteMany thanks Dave - I shall follow your advice. Thanks too for encouraging December trapping. I'd pretty much stopped but am about to post a couple of queries from last night. All v best M
