Memories of summer!

 Hi,

Having had precisely nada in last night's trap, I've been going through some queries from last August (16th).

Can someone please confirm these? I think they are

1. Yellow-barred Brindle

2. Red Twin-spot Carpet (or could it be dark-barred???

3. July Highflyer (although nothing like the options in the book!)

Many thanks and best wishes, David

  1. Hi David,
All three are correctly identified: Yellow-barred Brindle, Red Twin-spot Carpet & July Highflyer. The chances of you finding Dark-barred Twin-spot Carpet in our area are exceedingly remote these days (the same goes for Dark Marbled Carpet) and any claim for that species would need to be backed up by retaining the specimen. July Highflyer is exceedingly variable and I'm sure there would have been a limit to how many examples could be illustrated in the Field Guide (nine are shown as it is). For moths like that it is always worth checking other sources as well to see if you can find an exact match - a Google image search can often be helpful (with the caveat that there are a lot of misidentified moth pictures on the internet!).
