More summer queries

Hi again!

A few more queries - this time from August 1st last year. I think the first two are Lunar-spotted Pinion, but would like confirmation that one of the other Pinions hasn't sneaked into my trap.

The third one I have no idea about - unless it's a very weird July Highflyer?

And is the last one Ear Moth?

Thanks in advance - guidance much appreciated!

David

  1. Hi again,
The first two are indeed Lunar-spotted Pinion. We have started to see a welcome increase in Lesser-spotted Pinion over the past decade but the smartest-looking one, White-spotted Pinion, is sadly absent from our area at the moment. The third image is of the micro Udea prunalis, quite a common species which usually appears just as its equally common stablemate Udea olivalis is coming to a close. The last one is indeed one of the Ear species. Ear Moth is the only one resident locally but it should still be recorded as an "agg" unless dissected because at least one of the others (Saltern Ear) lives not too far away along the Thames estuary and they do wander.
