May Moths in Hook Norton

I moved onto a new housing estate in Hook Norton 9 months ago.   Originally this was pasture but there is an old hedgerow in front containing for example hawthorn, midland hawthorn, field maple, hazel, blackthorn, crab apple and oak.   So it should be good for moths.

I have had the trap out twice this month, and as last night was mild and still it was more productive than last week with 21 moths and 11 species.  New to me but I understand they are common were Chocolate tip and Waved umber.

The total for the year to date is 23 species.

  1. Not a bad total for just a couple of sessions in that habitat, Terry, so the hedge you mention will probably prove quite useful. Light pollution (street lights rather than your trap!) is generally the biggest problem on housing estates.
