Caterpillar in moth trap

Just 5 adult moths to the garden trap last night, but also this dark hairy caterpillar.. My suggestion is White Ermine, but I guess there could be other candidates?

  1. Hi Steve,
Going by the date it ought to be Ruby Tiger, which is the only one looking like that which over-winters as a larva, but I'm not sure that's 100% safe as an ID with so many changes going on!

    1. Thanks Dave, I think you are right. When I have seen Ruby Tiger larvae before, they have always had a reddish tinge, but I see that the larvae can be much darker over winter.
