Common plume taken on same night. Photo on plain paper background, still glared. Perhaps try light brown cardboard or piece of white muslin?

Hi Alan, I rarely take pictures at night. Try taking them in daylight, using natural light if at all possible (ie without flash). If the conditions are such that you do still have to use flash, try and dampen it down so that the light is less harsh (I find that holding the lid of a plastic pot in front of the flash works quite well). A plain paper background should be fine in those circumstances.

ReplyDeleteI always use natural light. The shadow on my common plume came from sunlight quite early so at a low level in the sky.
Direct sunlight is never a good idea, though, because it can be just as harsh as the flash and unsettles the moths as well. I generally use a north-facing window-sill.
