Unidentified tortrix

I feel I should recognise this moth from last night's garden trap, but can't put a name to it. The forewing length is about 8mm.
Help much appreciated. Steve Trigg, Cookham

  1. Hi Steve,
That's actually an Ypsolopha species. I think it is sylvella but I'd be tempted to get it checked as it doesn't quite fit either possibility according to the text in the field guide (the head is lighter than the thorax and the two brown cross-bands don't reach the costa, both of which would point to alpella, but to my mind it is too heavily marked for that species). Both are found locally in oak woodland.

    1. Many thanks Dave. I was looking in the wrong part of the field guide! I have kept the moth and will get it checked. Whether sylvella or alpella, it will be a new addition to the garden list.
