The Jeremy Moth

Is it just me, or can anyone else see our new Opposition Leader in this Spruce Carpet (I think) which came last night?  Here's the detail below and the man himself left.  And it's not yet Hallowe'en. Good moths at the moment with this lovely mild weather, but nothing else of great note.  Martin Wainwright, Thrupp, Oxon

  1. I think you'll find the moth is a Juniper carpet. Note the streak going to the wing apex and very indented cross-line.

  2. As Martin says, that's Juniper Carpet - a species which I'd be more than happy to see in my garden. A very nice catch. It has yet to be recorded here despite the juniper planted specially for it! I'm afraid all I can see on the thorax is Basil Fawlty...

  3. Thanks very much both. I've just checked back and found that I had a Juniper Carpet on the night of November 1, so they seem to have a foothold here. And yes, I see the Basil Fawlty resemblance though it somehow mystically combines for me with Jeremy C. What a thought

  4. The beard is too full for Corbyn. It looks more like Rasputin to me...

  5. Yes, I think that's a very valid point. I'm going to check my Waring, Townsend & Lewington to see if there are any other Carpet species on which this character appears. I wonder if Richard Lewington pondered it while painting, or indeed spotted any other such specious but enjoyable coincidences? All v best, M
