Hi there,
I'm confused by a very small micro that chose to fly onto my jumper while I was sat in the garden at about 5.00pm last night. It is no more than 6-7mm long. So I'm thinking E. immundana or R. naevana, but I guess it could be a small specimen of Z. isertana or C. splendana.
I told you I was confused!! Here it is - any help welcomed:
David
ReplyDeleteDave W says you have Rhopobota naevana. It is quite variable in colour, but has a distinctive way of sitting which is just about visible in the pictures.
Hi David, to me this looks similar to one of the forms of Epinotia nisella - the top image especially appears to show an orange-brown patch on the dorsum just beyond the 'arms' of the darker triangular-shaped areas seen in this form of the species.
ReplyDeleteI see where you are coming from, John, but this is not nisella. The creased wing-tips are the give-away.
DeleteMany thanks, both.
ReplyDeleteBest wishes
David
Dear All in fact it is not difficult to find photos online of species other than naevana showing the wing crease, including nisella, which in addition has a similarly-shaped forewing apex. As John points out, the chestnut patch is frequent in nisella and the ocellus is dark (whitish in naevana). As this is a very late date for naevana I would not accept this as such if were my decision as CMR.
