Another dumb question?

 Hi there,

This took a shine to our living room TV screen last night! I'm failing to make much progress with it - none of the various options seem to be flying at this time of year! Around 0.5/6 cms in length, wings tucked closely round the body, a sprinkling of golden scales and a couple of black spots. That's what I'm seeing, but it's not leading me anywhere!

Suggestions very welcome, David

  1. Hello David,
For moths found indoors, one of the first families to check should be the Tineids! With its spots, this one looks to be a very good match for Tinea pellionella, although there are one or two very rare confusion species. This species and Tineola bisselliella (which has golden-coloured wings and no spots) are the most common of the "Clothes Moths".

  2. Thanks, Dave. I had, in fact gone to this group, but Sterling and Parsons give April to October as the flight season. Is that wrong or is this mild year exceptional?

  3. Indoors I'm sure they could appear at any time of year. I don't see either of them very often but bisselliella is perhaps slightly more frequent, with records from inside the house here from February, March, April, July, August & October.
