Help with comments

Help!! When I try to add a comment to a post I get the following image:

To leave a comment, click the button below to sign in with Google.

There is a "Google" button belo this but when I click on it, I lose the comment box and go back to the blog page but in a different place to where I was trying to comment.

Can anyone help me with this please

  1. I'm afraid this does sometimes become a (temporary) problem for some contributors, for reasons that I don't understand. So long as you are signed-in to your Google account you "should" be able to comment. Have another try and see if you have better luck.

  2. Hi Dave. Friend of mine found the solution to my problem. May not work for everyone. The issue is that blog is owned and run by Google who are in the process of changing how third party cookies affect sites. In doing this it has meant quite a lot of sites won't work properly without third party cookies being allowed. When your blog page is opened, in the bar where you enter the website address at the top of the page, there is an image of an eye. Click on that and in the window that drops down, there as an option to allow third party cokkies, click on that and the issue, if it is the same as mine, will be over. Once done, this resolution will last for 90 days, after which, it will be necesary to do it again. You may, of course, be bombarded with unwanted adverts having allowed these cookies. If this is a problem, just allow cookies while using the blog site and then block again before you leave the site.

  3. Hi Alan. I think I have a more specific solution, but I'll explain the background first. The underlying issue is that when you log in to comment on this blog (upperthamesmoths.blogspot.com) the login process puts a cookie on your computer - which is fine except for the fact that that cookie belongs to the site blogger.com. Hence the blogger.com cookie is a "third-party cookie" as far as blogspot.com is concerned.
Blogspot.com is just the site used to publish blogs that are run by the Blogger software (look at where you are taken when you try to make a new post on this site, rather than just a comment). So both domains have the same owner, but because they're different domains, a cookie from one is treated as a third-party cookie on the other.
The deep irony is as your friend has found: the owner of Blogger is - - - Google. Yes, the same company that is also introducing the changes to the Chrome browser that by default blocks the third-party cookies needed by its own Blogger sites!
By default, Chrome used to allow third-party cookies everywhere. Now it blocks them.
Even before the latest "feature" on Chrome, some people (whether they use Chrome or another browser) had configured their browsers to disable third-party cookies by default, so they will have run into this problem whereby login to blogspot.com seems not to "stick" - there have been previous posts on this blog about this problem and I ran into it myself about four years ago.
Disabling third-party cookies puts an obstacle in the way of all of those hundreds of advertising companies who want to track your browsing activity, but it means you can't login to comment on this blog.
However, instead of simply allowing third-party cookies everywhere, most browsers have an option just to allow them on a specific site (this one).
I use Edge as my browser, and to enable this go to "Settings", "Cookies and site permissions", "Manage and delete cookies and site data", and click the "Add" button next to the "Allow" heading. Add the site "upperthamesmoths.blogspot.com" and click the box "Allow third-party cookies on this site". If you also comment on other blogs that are hosted on blogspot.com, then add the general "[*.]blogspot.com" instead of the specific "upperthamesmoths.blogspot.com". The magic spell for other browsers will be different, but they will have a similar feature.
This is a sticky change - it doesn't expire after 90 days. I'm not sure if the new Chrome option that you describe to allow third-party cookies applies only to the site that you're visiting when you click that option, or to all sites at once. I hope it's the former!
