Larval Case

Is this likely to be the larval case of a moth? Found on a rose leaf at Dancersend yesterday.
Is it possible to ID from this?
Thanks

  1. Hi Mick, yes it is. Assuming that it couldn't have wandered or fallen onto the leaf from anywhere else then this must be Coleophora gryphipennella. The case looks good for that species and the only other rose-feeding coleophorid is the nationally scarce Coleophora violacea whose case looks quite different.

    1. Thanks Dave. That's great! A new reserve record.
