Micro ID

Two Agonopterix moths from last night. The top I think is arenella and the bottom
looks like yeatiana, although this seems unlikely as it appears to mainly be a coastal species. Any help appreciated.....

And this was trapped at North Leigh Common, which has a lot of birch trees so I presume is Heringocrania unimaculella.

  1. Hi Nic,

The first Agonopterix is definitely arenella. I suspect the second will be heracliana but if you are trying to claim yeatiana I think it would need dissection. Yeatiana has not been recorded in Bucks and there are only about four records for Berks. While it is known from Oxon, I suspect it will be similarly rare.

Your Eriocrania is definitely one of the birch feeders but I'd be very cautious about getting it to species. As you say, unimaculella is a possibility (see what Martin says). In May it would be worth checking for leaf-mines on the birch at North Leigh Common because there are likely to be several species present and most can be told apart by looking closely at the larvae.
