First Centre-barred sallow today
I think the Carpet is Spruce based on the outer cross-line.
The other, not sure, I originally thought it was an old Small Square-spot but it has a dark outer cross-line and seems too heavily marked for a Square-spot Rustic (particularly the dark mark between the two paler marks).

They look like Grey Pine Carpet and Small Square-spot Mark.
ReplyDeletethanks Peter - what did you use to determine Grey Pine over Spruce Carpet?
ReplyDeleteDespite its name, Grey Pine Carpet is typically has a brown central band whereas the Spruce is usually greyer. The Spruce has more clearly defined dark edges around the "segmentation" on the central band, which are less defined in Grey Pine. I'm sure there are other features too.
ReplyDeletethanks Peter!
ReplyDeleteI agree with Grey Pine Carpet but beware because Spruce Carpet can have a brownish band. It's a nasty pair - variegated forms of Spruce are ok but moths showing the features of both species are not uncommon and the only safe way is probably the male antennae.
