Stigmella mine

Dave's post from 26th August prompted me to inspect the leaves of our Sycamore and Field Maple. Having found a mine, on A. campestre, I think it's either Stigmella speciosa and S. aceris, help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Nigel

  1. Hi Nigel, of the two Acer-feeding Nepticulids, Stigmella speciosa is only found on Sycamore while S.aceris uses both Field Maple and Norway Maple. You have S.aceris there, backed up by the fact that the coiled frass virtually fills the mine.
