A Blog for moth recorders in Bucks, Berks and Oxon
Hi Charles, you have a choice between two of the so-called "Mint Moths", either Pyrausta aurata or Pyrausta purpuralis. They're both reasonably common and are flying now. Your example looks as if it might be P.aurata but you would need a better view of the hindwings to be sure. See:http://upperthames-butterflies.org.uk/Moth_files/Pyraustas_difficult_moths.pdf
Thanks Dave. I guessed it was pyrausta aurata as the images online of Pyrausta purpuralis seem much more purplish.
